Tips for Decent Sleep as a Parent

I miss sleep. It’s been years since I’ve been able to go to bed when I want and wake up when I want. With two little kids running around my house, there is always something and they NEVER SLEEP IN! Man I miss the days of sleeping in.

When my oldest was born, he was a fairly decent sleeper. I didn’t realize how lucky I was until #2 came around and didn’t sleep the night until he was 2. YES… 2! Trust me I’ve been there and I’ve done it. I’ve tried everything. Now, our kids have improved their sleeping a bit, but there are still some pretty rough nights here and there. As I slowly come out of the lack of sleep comma that has been the last 5 years of my life, I realized a few things that have substantially helped me get those extra hours which have made all the difference.

Here are my tips for improving sleep and getting a decent sleep as a parent:

  1. Go to bed early
I know, it’s tempting to watch the most recent episode of The Bachelor or Housewives, but you know that 5am wakeup call from the kids comes very early. I always aim to go to be between 9pm and 9:30pm. Yes it’s early, but when you have interrupted sleep, getting those few extra hours in can go a long way.
  2. Black out Blinds
Sure you’re not sleeping in on the regular and you’re usually up before the sun comes up. However, the power of an afternoon nap in a totally dark room will really help you recharge, even if it’s only an hour.
  3. Good Mattress
The power of a good mattress is undeniable. There are so many amazing mattresses out there and finding the right one is important. I love that you can test and order mattresses online now. Some mattresses that can help your sleep are ones like Lucid Mattress
  4. Don’t Let the Kids Sleep in Your Bed
I think it goes without saying that a tiny human in your bed kicking you in the face, or digging their elbows into your body does not equal a good night. We’ve done as much as we can to avoid having the kids sleep in our bed. Do they sneak in early in to our bed in the morning from time to time? Sure. But it’s not the norm.

So those are my tips to some better sleep as a parent. They come from my experience and although they seem very obvious, they are important.

Hang in there!
